C1 W1 S1

Core Skill: 1V1

  • Main Moment: Ball Possession

  • Key Principle: Individual Possession

  • Specific Aspect: Receive, Turn and Finish

Session Objective

Improve player’s ability to beat a defender from behind. Specifically we want the attacker to receive the ball on the “safe” side away from the defender. Focus is on balance and body posture to locate and feel for the defender’s position. Once the ball is received, can the attacker rotate off the defender to get past. Defensively we are looking to improve the ability to take the ball away from the attacker and into control, not kick it away.

Equipment

  • Cones: 6 Yellow, 6 Blue, 4 Red (Or Target Goals)

  • Balls: 8 or enough for each player to have one ball

Session Rules

This session can be done with as little as two players, but is best with a group of four per area with rotation. Pending the size of the group, you can add multiple fields to keep the intensity high. Avoid too much time in the queue but enough time to quickly recover and go again.

Field size is 7 M x 15 M.

One attacker and one defender start in the lower box close to the goal. The attacker checks toward the start line and receives a ball from the passer. The attacker should call for the ball and indicate which foot they want to receive the pass. Once the attacker receives the ball, they look to beat the defender 1v1 and score in between the red cones or in a target goal. If the defender wins the ball, they can score between the red cones or in the goal. Once each 1v1 has finished, the attacker becomes the defender, the passer becomes the attacker and the defender gets the ball and heads back to the starting line.

Coaching Points

  • Technique

Can the attacker receive the ball on the “safe” side of the body away from the defender? Hide the ball from the defender to avoid them kicking the ball away. Have the attacker extend their arm and weight the foot closest to the defender to feel their position. Use the arm to roll away from the defender and escape toward the goal.

  • Movement

Can the attacker use deceptive movement to get the defender to commit to a direction? The attacker should show lateral movement prior to receiving the ball, not just running straight towards it. The movement must be deliberate and strong enough to get the defender to commit. The attacker can then move quickly in the other direction with the ball escaping the pressure.

  • Awareness

Can the attacker check their shoulder for the defender’s position prior to receiving the ball? It is important to decide either to turn with the first touch or brace for the defender’s pressure. The attacker should check if there is space between the defender and use that information to decide how best to take on the 1v1.
